Doers, Not Just Hearers of the Word
James is often considered the "Proverbs of the New Testament." James wrote this letter primarily to Jewish converts to Christianity around 60 AD. They had been experiencing a lot of external trials and persecution, as well as internal temptation, and needed to be encouraged in their faith. James offers practical wisdom for the Christian life. In this sermon, James encourages the believers to analyze their faith to see if they are actually "doing" the Word in action, or just simply "hearing" it. He seems to allude to Jesus' own teaching about building our house on the sand. He exhorts them to put off their sin, and humbly receive the Word of God for real change in their life.
