Distracted Hearts, Shallow Love
Hurry kills relationships, intimacy, wisdom, and love. All of these need to be slow, purposeful, and given to undivided attention. Paul desires for every believer to 'comprehend the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge.' But this can't be done when we are distracted and fragmented and hurried. We are surrounded by time saving devices and inventions, yet we still don't seem to have time. We think this is a normal way of living, but it has only recently become like this. In the past 15 years, we have specifically been conditioned to accept constant interruption, fragmented thinking, and both the ability and desire to be many places at once. Our solution is surely not to have more time. We have plenty. Nor is our solution simply getting rid of technology and inventions (though no doubt we could all use some wisdom and discipline in this area). Jesus gives us the solution in two words: 'Follow Me.' To truly follow Jesus, we first must know Him. We must enjoy Him, behold Him, and spend time with Him. We must have fellowship and communion with Him. Slowly. Purposefully. Intentionally, and with our undivided attention and love. ABOUT THIS SERIES: Every year, we kick off our year together "recalibrating" the direction we are heading in and adjusting our sails, so to speak, in order to make sure we are keeping in step with Christ. We look specifically this year, firstly, at what exactly our purpose and mission is. From there, we will spend the following six sermons looking at the specific tools that God gives us that help us fulfill our purpose and mission. These are, namely, the Word of God, prayer, and Gospel community. How do we utilize these tools to help us grow deeper in Christ and be built up in Him, rather than just seeing them as items to check off of our list? How can these become conduits for real change and powerful transformation, rather than just religious duties? Join us in this journey as we aim to know Jesus more and more deeply.
