In addition to the daily Psalms readings, by downloading the PrayerMate App you'll be able to see the weekly memory verse, and see how you can be praying with the church and for your own heart.
Every year, thousands of Christians kick off their New Year with the desire to read through the bible in a year…and then fail. Some people, however, do make it through, but half the time their reading is simply to “just get through it” and check off a box. Little to no time is put into actually meditating on the verses or thinking them through. Let’s face it, it’s not quite as easy as it sound. But at the same time, it is one of the most fruitful and important things we can do as believers. Starting on January 1, 2015, we started a plan to go through the bible, from Genesis to Revelation over the course of TWO years, in order to give us less reading, so we can spend more time actually meditating on those texts and applying them in prayer.
If you want to read through the bible, and especially if you want to understand it and learn how to really apply it to your life and have it deepen your walk with Christ, this is the reading plan for you!
1. Printed hard copies of the plan are available at church.
2. Open the PDF of the plan to view online or download and print out.
3. Daily reminder through the PrayerMate App (see below).
4. Daily reading published online on our Facebook and Twitter page.
Additionally, one of the great features of this particular plan is that it coincides with a book called How to Read the Bible Book by Book by Gordon and Fee. Each day, as you read through the text, you can open up the book and they give you a guided tour of that exact set of Scriptures. The book is intended, however, not just to tell you what that section is about, but to teach you how to read the bible overall, as well as how to read individual books and passages. Over the course of two years, you will have learned far more about how to read through the bible effectively, getting a much greater understanding of God’s redemptive plan for mankind. Find the book on Amazon or purchase it at church (when in stock). It is available in a paperback as well as in e-book format.
Another feature of this bible reading plan is that we won’t just read through the bible cover to cover, but we will also be alternating between reading the Psalms and Proverbs. Over two years, we will read the Old and New Testament once each (in order), and we will be reading the Psalms and Proverbs four times each. The great thing about this is that the Psalms and Proverbs (Psalms in particular) more or less give us our “dictionary” or “language” for prayer, teaching us how to pray to the Lord. You will find yourself praying so much more effectively and passionately as you tie your prayers to the Word of God as you learn to “pray the Psalms.”
Going through the bible at a slower pace, and going through it with others, will be a tremendous blessing to you. Our goal as people is to learn more and more how to truly abide in Christ. It is when we abide that fruit is born in our lives. We see sin put to death, we receive power for ministry, and we see our hearts change. But how to abide becomes the trick for us. It is through the Word of God, prayer, and Gospel community that God has designed for His grace to flow from Him and to us through. Learning how to see these “means of grace” be conduits and streams that lead us back to the fountain of Christ will be the greatest benefit in your spiritual life. I hope you join us in this great pursuit of learning to abide in the love of Christ.
