So that friend calls you up and says, “Hey can we go to coffee? I need some advice.” What now?
Or lately you have been gripped by worry and can’t seem to break the cycle. Or you find yourself short tempered toward your spouse and/or kids. Maybe that short temper is growing into bitterness. How can the gospel we know and love help us in our daily needs and trials? We “know” the gospel but sometimes take it for granted. Our soul gets restless. We know that we are saved by the life, death and resurrection of Jesus... and I can already see your eyes glazing over.
The IBCD Care & Discipleship course has been truly amazing. It makes the Gospel so central to every aspect of life, from healing deep hurts of things like infidelity (we forgive because God has forgiven us so much/we are forgiven because God is faithful when we are unfaithful - Ephesians 4:32, 2 Timothy 2:13) to believing God’s sovereignty in our worries and fears (don’t be anxious, if God takes care of the birds and grass he will also take care of you - Matthew 6:25-26) to overcoming temptation (we have a High Priest who is able to sympathize with us. Hebrews 4:15)
Every lesson is applicable and beneficial for both personal encouragement and when talking to friends and family in distress. Our true hope is God and any other hope is false hope. Lesson after lesson Christ is at the center of how we care for and disciple ourselves and each other. Scripture is our sword and in 2 Corinthians 10:3-4 Paul reminds us, “For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.”
If you haven't heard of this amazing resource, it’s 30 total hours of teaching (15 hrs per level) that will root you in the Gospel like never before. If you bought the Level 1 workbook ($15) and haven’t started watching the videos or listening to the MP3’s I highly recommend getting into it. We will only have the Level 1 resources available for free through our church for a certain amount of time. If you find it hard to focus by yourself, find a buddy and make a plan and go through them together. The first two levels can be audited for free and there is an option to take the third level and become a certified counselor. You can get more info on our website. The time is short and the days are evil. In John 14:6 Jesus says he is “the way, the truth, and the life.” We need to be done with superficial “social club” Christianity and learn how to really love and care for each other with the love of Jesus. We won’t ever be perfect in this love, but by God’s grace we can become much better at it and the Care & Discipleship course is a great tool to help us grow.
