Philippians Series

This year, we are making a major push towards pursuing the joy of the Lord in our lives and in our church. To help us in this pursuit, we are challenging each other to take part in “the Joy Project.”  The Joy Project is an initiative to give us a road map and a blueprint to know how to fight for true happiness and joy that comes from being in awe of Christ and all that He is and all that He has done for us.

As part of The Joy Project, we are going through the book of Philippians as a church in our sermon series - Philippians Unchained: Living in the Freedom of Joy. This series focuses on joy amid all circumstances through savoring Christ above all things. Below is a compilation of resources relating to the book of Philippians.

Books & Commentaries

  • Exalting Jesus in Philippians by Tony Merida and Francis Chan.
Very easy to read, practical, engaging, with good heart probing material.
  • Basics for Believers by D.A. Carson.
Carson is quite intellectual, but boils this very short book (124 pages) into 5 chapters, all based off of 4 sermons he did on Philippians, so it reads like a sermon. It gets to the very basic message of Christian life and Paul's purpose in writing to the Philippians.
  • Knowing the Bible: Philippians by Ryan Kelly, J.I. Packer (Theological Editor).
This is a 12 week study on Philippians, and this series is made in conjunction with the ESV Study Bible.
  • To Live is Christ by Matt Chandler.
Chandler offers tangible ways to develop a faith of pursuing, knowing, and loving Jesus.
  • NIV Application Commentary by Frank Thielman.
This is a great series of commentaries.  They break down each section into three parts: Original Meaning, Bridging Context, and Contemporary Significance, so it takes the Scripture into different avenues for study and application.
