Romans 5.8
God shows his love for us
in that while we were still sinners,
Christ died for us.

There’s many things that are true in my life, but all of those things must bow and submit to what is “Truth.” Truth is the lens by which I should see and interpret all things in my life, and Truth should be what shapes my views of everything that comes my way. Every thought that comes to mind should be held captive by me, interrogated, and have its validity be determined (2 Corinthians 10.5, 6). Here are some examples of “true things” that, when left unsubmitted to “Truth,” will have an unnecessary hold on my heart:

YES IT IS TRUE…
I have sinned in shameful ways…
(Psalm 51.3, 4)

BUT THE TRUTH IS…
I stand before God as His righteousness.
(2 Corinthians 5.21)

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

YES IT IS TRUE…
I deserve separation from God…
(Isaiah 59.2)

BUT THE TRUTH IS…
He has adopted me
as His child for all eternity.
(Romans 8.15-17)

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

YES IT IS TRUE…
My sin has had
terrible consequences in my life…
(James 1.4, 15)

BUT THE TRUTH IS…
He works all things for good
for those who love Him.
(Romans 8.28)

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

YES, IT IS TRUE…
My sin has made me
worthless and unlovely…
(Romans 3.10-12)

BUT THE TRUTH IS…
The cross makes me
beautiful and beloved.
(2 Corinthians 5.17)

Though it may be true that many things like the ones found above are true, these true things may describe me, but only the Truths that are above can truly define me.

True things
may describe my life,
but only Truth
should define my life.

God alone is the One who defines me. When He has declared me as “not guilty” because of the work of Christ, His Word stands.  Nothing else has any higher power than His decree.

So when the devil throws
your sins in your face
and declares that
you deserve death and hell,
tell him this:

“I admit that I deserve
death and hell, what of it?
For I know One who suffered
and made satisfaction
on my behalf.
His name is Jesus Christ,
Son of God,
and where He is
there I shall be also!”

-Martin Luther

What are some “true” things that have been overtaking my heart lately?  What “Truths” do I need to be reminded of today in order to force those true things into their rightful place?

Personalize and Read or Pray Aloud:

Psalm 8.1–9

1 O Lord, our Lord,
            how majestic is your name
            in all the earth!
   You have set your glory
            above the heavens.
2 Out of the mouth of babies and infants,
            you have established strength
            because of your foes,
to still the enemy and the avenger.
3 When I look at your heavens,
            the work of your fingers,
            the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
4 what is man that you are mindful of him,
            and the son of man
            that you care for him?
5 Yet you have made him a little lower
            than the heavenly beings
and crowned him with glory and honor.
6 You have given him dominion
            over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under his feet,
7 all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
8 the birds of the heavens,
and the fish of the sea,
            whatever passes along
            the paths of the seas.
9 O Lord, our Lord,
            how majestic is your name
            in all the earth!

Pray Aloud:

May our Lord Jesus Christ
Be near me to defend me,
            Within me to refresh me,
            Around me to preserve me,
            Before me to guide me,
            Behind me to justify me,
            Above me to bless me;
Who lives and reigns with the Father
            and the Holy Spirit,
            One God, now and forever.
