Deuteronomy 29.29
“The secret things belong
to the Lord our God,
but the things that are revealed
belong to us and to our children forever,
that we may do all the words of this law.”

God is not a god who can just simply be “found.” If He was, He would truly be a terrible god! When my boys were little, I would play hide and seek with them. If I wanted to, I could hide forever and they would never find me, but because I want them to find me and enjoy their Dad, I let myself be found by hiding conspicuously behind a curtain, or whispering “over here!” when they are near.

God created all things, including us, to put His glory on display and to share His beauty and glory with others. He had perfect unity and harmony within Himself, so He was not lonely or in any need, but out of love and eternal generosity He desired to be revealed and be shared among others for their own sake and enjoyment.

Creation is the theater
of God’s glory.

-John Calvin

He has revealed Himself in so many ways throughout human history, but most importantly, He has revealed Himself by coming down to us. If I want to know God, I need to do no more than look to Jesus, who is the fulness of God dwelling in bodily form (Colossians 2.9, Hebrews 1.3), and I can know Jesus by knowing His Word.  His Word has been given to me so that Jesus would not stay hidden behind a curtain and be lost to history, susceptible to changing and evolving stories passed down. Rather, it has been given and meticulously preserved so that I can know Him, His works, and His love as it is revealed in His very Word.

We can’t even read
each other’s minds,
much less what is in
the mind of God.

God has clothed
His thoughts in words,
and there is no way
to know Him
except
by knowing the Scriptures.

-John Stott

The Good News reminds me that God has disclosed who He is, because like a good earthly father, He wants to be known and enjoyed by His children and doesn’t want to remain hidden. He wants to see joy in the faces and hearts of His kids as they discover His presence and love. I am so thankful that my Father loves me in this way. He wants me to (and lets me!) find Him and know Him!

Read Again Out Loud and Make it into a Prayer:

Deuteronomy 29.29

Personalize and Read or Pray Aloud:

Psalm 98.1–9
1 Oh sing to the Lord a new song,
          for he has done marvelous things!
          His right hand and holy arm have
          worked salvation for him.
2 The Lord has made known his salvation;
          he has revealed his righteousness
          in the sight of the nations.
3 He has remembered his steadfast love
          and faithfulness to the house of Israel.
All the ends of the earth have seen
          the salvation of our God.

4 Make a joyful noise to the Lord,
          all the earth;
          break forth into joyous song
          and sing praises!
5 Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre,
          with the lyre and the sound of melody!
6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn
          make a joyful noise
          before the King, the Lord!
7 Let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
          the world and those who dwell in it!
8 Let the rivers clap their hands;
          let the hills sing for joy together
9 before the Lord,
          for he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with righteousness,
          and the peoples with equity.

Pray Aloud:

May the spiritual songs
          and sweet hymns I sing to You,
          O Christ, please Your Majesty.
As I offer my spiritual sacrifice;
          You live and reign together
          with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
          forever and ever.

-Antiphonary of Bangor, Ireland,
          7th Century, after the Gospel Canticle

Matthew 6.9–13
9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
10 Your kingdom come, your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread,
12 and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
